Phelps Creek receives high marks from Wine Enthusiast

May 3, 2017

Our partner Phelps Creek Vineyards recently received ratings of 90+ points for five of their wines from Wine Enthusiast:

Phelps Creek 2014 Lynette Chardonnay – 92 Points

Sleek and distinctive, this is loaded with snappy flavors of lime, green melon and wet stone. The fermentation in French oak (20% new) brings a lick of butterscotch to the finish.”

Phelps Creek 2014 Cuvee Alexandrine Pinot Noir – 91 Points

Elegance and finesse are the touchstones here, with the scaffolding to age for decades. Tight and precise, it shows pomegranate and red-berry fruit, stiff and potent tannins, and plenty of supporting acidity.”

Phelps Creek 2014 Columbia Gorge Pinot Noir – 91 Points

Lovely strawberry and cherry fruit comes with light touches of sweet spice. It’s a pretty wine, yet does not sacrifice power.”

Phelps Creek 2015 Sauvignon Blanc – 90 Points

For those who like a tangy lip-smacking style of Sauvignon Blanc, this is spot-on. Green melon, lemon, lime, grapefruit and green apple are all in play. It’s a classic palate-cleansing food wine.”

Phelps Creek 2015 Gorge Crest Gewurztraminer – 90 Points

Subtle aromas suggest light talc, acacia and calla lily, while in the mouth this is soft and smooth. Overall it’s just plain pretty, with details of apple and apple skin.”

Marotti Campi Wine Dinner June 15 at Fornarelli’s

June 1, 2015

For more than a century, the Marotti Campi family has been growing and making fascinating wines in Italy’s Marche region, specializing in indigenous grapes. In some cases, they are one of very few vineyards growing these delicious varietals, and have helped save them from extinction. For instance, several of their wines are made from the Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, which has an incredible floral aroma and is only grown by 3 producers in the world.

Come meet Lorenzo Marotti Campi and sample these wines paired with recipes passed down the from the old country at Fornarelli’s Ristorante. The Wine Thief will be on hand to take orders. At just $49 per person, this wine dinner is an incredible value. Call 203-745-5677 to reserve.

Paolo e Noemia d’Amico Wine Dinner at Rustica

January 8, 2015

UPDATE: Due to weather, this event has been rescheduled for Monday, February 2nd at 6pm. Unfortunately, Guillaume Gelly and Riccardo Bertocci will no longer be able to host. Cellar Fine Wines Portfolio Manager Jillian Simms will guide you through the wines in their stead. Please contact Rustica at 860-526-9021 to reserve your table for the new date.

Please join us for a Paolo e Noemia d’Amico wine dinner on Monday, February 2, at 6pm at Rustica Ristorante.

Rustica recently got a nod from Connecticut Magazine as an “Expert Pick” for Best Italian in the state, so we can’t imagine a better place to showcase these Italian wines which have received accolades from VinItaly, James Suckling, Robert Parker, Condé Nast Traveler, and more.

In fact, we will be debuting d’Amico’s Atlante Cabernet Franc at this dinner. This striking wine is one of the finest in our portfolio, and we look forward to sharing it with the guests on January 26! View the full menu below.

Saxtons River Distillery CT Launch Generates Media Buzz

December 3, 2014

We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone who joined us and Christian Stromberg of Saxtons River Distillerywhen he visited Connecticut last month to launch his Sapling line of Vermont maple spirits and his Perc coffee liqueur. Each event was packed, and the mediatook notice as well. Christian appeared on Better Connecticut, and was interviewed by the Bristol Observer.

We’re so glad to see these distinctly New England products catching on. They are available at package stores all over the state. The latest bars to stock them areEli’s on Whitney in New Haven (stop in for a coffee martini!) and Plan B Burger Bar. Ask for a Maple Manhattan, Vermonter, or Perky Pumpkin at any of their locations throughout the state.

Introducing Sapling Liqueur

October 27, 2014

We are thrilled to be introducing Sapling, Saxtons River Distillery‘s line of craft Vermont maple spirits, to CT. Saxtons River Distillery founder Christian Stromberg is from Terryville, CT, so bringing his creations into his home state is especially meaningful. He will appear at three launch events in early November. All are free.

Wednesday, November 5 from 5-8pm at Birch Hill Tavern, 1320 Manchester Rd, Glastonbury: Sapling Liqueur spirits tasting with Saxtons River Distillery founder Christian Stromberg.

Thursday, November 6 at 7pm at Divine Wine Emporium, 275 W Main St Niantic: Sapling Liqueur spirits tasting with Saxtons River Distillery founder Christian Stromberg and performance by singer James Maple, winner of Album of the Year and Best Singer/Songwriter at the 2014 CT Music Awards. RSVP required: (860) Share this event on Facebook!

Friday November 7, 4-7pm at Liquor Depot 687 W Main St, New Britain, CT. Sapling Liqueur spirits tasting with Saxtons River Distillery founder Christian Stromberg.

Stromberg’s family came to New England from Lithuania in 1906, where they had a tradition of distilling. He was born in Terryville, CT, and grew up in Connecticut. When he moved to Vermont, he became interested in maple syrup production and realized the care that went into syrup was similar to distilling, so he drew on his roots to start Saxtons River Distillery. In addition to his maple Sapling Liqueur line, the distillery also offers a coffee liqueur, Perc.

While maple spirits are not an entirely new concept, Sapling Liqueur is noteworthy not only for its New England character, but also because virtually every other maple whiskey or liqueur on the market is synthesized. Sapling contains the real thing.

Phelps Creek in Hartford Courant, Chicago Tribune

August 7, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-08-07 at 11.34.43 AM

Phelps Creek Vineyards is featured prominently in a story about Oregon Chardonnay that appears in today’s Hartford Courant as well as several other major newspapers.

The article beautifully describes how Oregon chardonnays fit into the larger chard landscape and highlights Phelps Creek’s 2012 vintage:

“Perhaps more cerebral than hedonistic; its pleasure is thinking about its pleasure, the dynamic way the high-note flavors of lemon curd, white spice and minerals flit over its richly textured, creamy feel in the mouth. Its length surprises with its persistence, closing after a long while with tangy acidity.”

Pregame wine tasting

January 28, 2014

When you think of watching football, you probably think of beer. Yet, many classic game day foods pair surprisingly well with certain wines.

On Saturday, February 1, from noon-4pm at Valencia Liquor in Meriden, we will be pouring eight different wines that complement common sports watching snacks, from chili and buffalo wings, to guacamole and chips.

Better Connecticut invited us on today to talk about the tasting.

Serving carefully chosen wines can be a good way to have something exciting for game day guests who may not care about football. Or, if you expect there may not be good drink options for you at the party you’re planning to attend, why not bring some wine to share?

Come taste wines specially selected for viewing parties on Saturday at Valencia Liquor, 1231 East Main Street, Meriden, CT.

Two chances to taste sparkling wine

December 12, 2013

Whether at a holiday gathering, or a New Year’s Eve celebration for two, this is a great time of year to enjoy sparkling wine. We are offering two chances to discover new bubbles from Italy’s Veneto region.

Friday, December 20, at Seaside Wine and Spirits from 4-6pm we’ll be sharing Ruggeri Prosecco Giall’Oro. The crystal clarity, gentle sweetness and minute bubbles make this a sophisticated aperitif or after dinner beverage. 118 Main St, Old Saybrook

Monday, December 23, at Valencia Liquor from 12-4pm, La Montecchia Fior d’Arancio will be available for sampling. This exuberant, sweet, sparkling Moscato is perfect for a celebration or with dessert. 1231 E Main St, Meriden
